The House That Williams-Sonoma Built
When I first moved to L.A., I earned my living as a cater-waiter. I remember working in some incredibly stunning homes.
By far, my MOST FAVORITE house is a BREATHTAKING Italian villa in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles. At the time, it was owned by the late CEO of Williams-Sonoma, W. Howard Lester. Yes, I loved the house, but the grounds are what really knocked me out. Especially the long driveway, surrounded by vegetation. I mean, once the front gates open, you feel like you're entering a dream wonderland! And you ARE!
I recall Mr. Lester being very polite. He told me he didn't necessarily want people wandering upstairs, but when the guests arrived, they were as bowled over by the house's stunning beauty as I was, and wanted to see EVERY nook and cranny. So, what did I do? I let 'em wander upstairs! Hell, I couldn't blame them. Before they arrived, I sure as heck looked in every single room and closet all over the place, too. All of it was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!

Ain't Cute
When it comes to writing, it ALWAYS takes me what seems like an ETERNITY to begin. I mean, honestly, I can find ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL sorts of crap to do BEFORE sitting down and putting fingers to keyboard. Mop the kitchen floor. Wash the tub. Clean the stove top. Etc., etc., etc!!!
I have a one-hour spec script that HAS to be mailed by June 2nd! Yet, I HAVEN'T written ONE word of it. Call me crazy, but more oftentimes than not, I have always waited 'til the eleventh hour to write tons of scripts. I KNOW I should be writing it now, so why aren't I? I'll tell you why: 'cause writing scripts take sooooooooo much OUTTA me! Truth be told, the actual writing is soooooo grueling to me. I know I should change my conversation about the work so that I can feel different about it. So, right here and right now, I'm changing that conversation.
Writing WILL lead me to the life I've only dreamed about up to now. So, let the record state, TOMORROW, SATURDAY, MAY 23rd, 2015, I WILL begin writing my script. I have a mere week and a couple days 'til the deadline! And, NO, I do NOT wanna wait 'til the very last moment to get the dang thing written.
'Cause the state of panic AIN'T CUTE!!!!!! :)

The REAL Wisteria Lane
If there's anything more beautiful than a wisteria setting, I've never seen it.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could sit on that bench and write all day. I'd have to leave by sundown, though, 'cause I bet that tranquil setting would feel hella creepy at night! :)
Summa Cum Proude
Last Saturday, the 16th, my beloved angel, TRISHA, celebrated the college graduation of her firstborn, RYAN, from Fordham University. The young fella finished college in THREE years and was graduated SUMMA CUM LAUDE. Oh, he was also a starting member of the baseball team. Talk about an OVER-ACHIEVER!!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS, Ryan! Now, go out and do your part to make this world a BETTER PLACE!
And congratulations, Trisha, for being such an INCREDIBLE & INCREDIBLY PROUD mommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Aboard, She's Love
Ohhhhhhhhhhh how I loved her so back in the late '70s to mid-'80s! She always came across as the sweetest and kindest customer service rep ever! Honestly, every time I watched her show I felt I knew her.
Well, that was then and this is now. Wherever she is, I hope she's well. She was a true sweetie pie!!!!!!

Being Mary Jane
Okay, this week I begin writing my script for BEING MARY JANE. The show is currently one of my favorites. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if NOBODY else submitted a spec of this show to the ABC Disney Writing Program. Good! Then mine will be the ONLY one!
Here's to my WRITING SUCCESS with ABC Disney!!!!

Shelley, The Bevelhimers, Culver & I
Shelley and I
This past weekend was one of the most GLORIOUS weekends of my LIFE!
EVER!
Through the GRACIOUSNESS of my beloved friend, SHELLEY, I made a return visit to picturesque Culver Military Academy! I attended one summer of the school's summer session waaaaaaaaaaaay back in '79. Anyway, Shelley invited me to stay with her loving family in their cozy lakeside condo, and take in a lacrosse game in which the son of one of my favorite fraternity brothers is the starting Long Stick Middle (LSM) player for Zionsville Community High School.
Originally, I wanted to attend the lacrosse game as a complete surprise to my fraternity brother, Joe, and his delightful wife, Tracy. But Shelley knew she'd have to tell the couple somethin' in order to get them to agree to come back to her place to hang out after the game. So, she spilled the beans. Turns out, spilling the beans didn't make Joe and Tracy believe I'd be there, 'cause, truth be told, I've told 'em I'd visit numerous times before, but never have. Well, this time, Shelley was NOT taking, "NO," for an answer. And, poof, I was there!
I had never met Shelley's terrific mom, Sherry, Shelley's husband, Kevin (who has the HOTTEST man cave in all of Indiana), nor her kind and articulate son, Quinn and beautiful fashionista daughter, Lauren. So, meeting all of them was a gem! Quinn will be here in L.A. shortly to begin a summer internship. So, I'm lookin' forward to breakin' bread with him when he arrives.
This weekend was also my first time meeting Joe's children: Bryan (the lacrosse star), Sidney and Cody. And what a hoot they were! I could listen all day to little Cody's tales about his fight with cancer. For a seventh grader, he sure is eloquent and dang humorous when he discusses all he's been through.
Bryan, Cody, Sydney and I
All in all, this weekend jaunt was phenomenal! Shelley showed me around the Culver campus and town as if I was a new resident. Heck, if I follow her lead, I'll some day submit myself for employment at the venerable institution. Hey, who knows? Stranger things have happened in the world.
I'll be indebted to Shelley for years and years to come! I mean, her insistence that I come visit compelled me to acknowledge that I SHOULD spend MUCH MORE time with those I love and who love me, instead of thinking I should be WORKING. Heck, I hope this weekend helps her realize the same is true for her, too. I truly had a BLAST! So much so I didn't want it to END!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, revisiting Culver was made all the sweeter 'cause I stayed in Shelley's mom's comfy condo which just happens to sit right on the stunning Lake Maxinkuckee! Gotta love Culver Cove Condos!

Love Buddies 2015
This past Saturday night, I checked out Don B. Welch's updated stage play, LOVE BUDDIES. The play is a series of vignettes, depicting interpersonal relationships between couples and/or friends. It truly grapples with a range of emotions. Just like real people do!!!!
Don first presented the play back in 2010. In that cast, my boy, JASON NEWSOME, made his L.A. stage debut.
JASON NEWSOME
This new cast featured the stage debut of my boy, JAY HUNTER. He did a terrific job, and after the performance, told me he had a great time, too! I look forward to seeing him in other productions!

I can't say enough about how BLESSED Los Angeles' theater community is for having DON B. WELCH. The man CONSISTENTLY produces entertaining work! And he consistently provides opportunity after opportunity for black performers to flex their acting muscles. I've been patronizing his work since 2004 or so.
God bless you, Don! This ol' boy here considers you a GODSEND to actors in this crazy business called SHOW!

The Fighter
"This scarring is a constant reminder of the unwarranted brutality many officers indulge in. I sustained this injury from being struck in my skull 5 times with an ASP baton by an officer who mistook me for a criminal. Had it not been for my adrenaline rushing and a comrade stepping in to pull the officer off of me I may not be here or with a properly functioning mind, and my daughter would be fatherless in one way or another. I didn't realize I'd been wounded until someone saw the blood running down my chest. I've defended myself against aggressive officers and avoided incarceration. I've overpowered officers and survived. So my perspective is a bit different than most. Its not as easy as simply following the law and doing what the police ask you to do. I've been harassed by police since I was a boy and I have NEVER been a criminal. All that being said I understand the frustrations of those in Baltimore, Ferguson, New York, etc... Black males of all ages are being mowed down like blades of grass daily. We must put our petty differences aside and become more cohesive. Light skin, dark skin. This gang, that gang. Your block, my block. All trivial, foolish, and inconsequential in the big picture. The more divided any group is the easier it is to attack. Tragedy shouldn't be the only force that truly brings us together. And in spite of the justifiable rage many of us feel, destroying one's own community is fruitless. Yes it highlights the collective frustrations of some but it is ultimately counterproductive. It also provides cover for others with ill intent to perpetrate crimes and tears the focus away from the real issue. Energies and emotions need to be focused on avenues of progress and on bringing those to justice who inflicted the pain. The corrupt precincts, officers, and judicial representatives. Rally. Protest. Create and sign petitions. Draft bills. Change legislation. Arm yourselves within your legal rights. Always defend yourself and protect your loved ones. And while fighting for change pursue education and achieve. Work to occupy the positions that give YOU the power and means to affect real and more expeditious change in your community."
