Niecy, U Ain't Ever Lied!

When I was 12 or 13 yrs old, I used to wake up in the morning, before school, to the radio: R&B station, WTLC. One of the most popular songs at that time was a light & airy ditty by, Deniece Williams. What separated "Niecy" from many others was her incredible range. Her notes simply floated above the clouds like Minnie Ripperton's. Anyway, her hot song of the time was called, FREE. And even as young as I was, I realized the importance of its chorus (although I, myself, never fully embraced it 'til in my 40's):

I got to be free
free free
and I just got to be me
me me
Free Free
and I just wannna
I just wanna be me
FREE!!

Fast-forward more than 30 years and I clearly see that MANY, MANY people desperately NEED to listen to those lyrics until they feel comfortable enough to LIVE them! From state senators to county judges to Hollywood actors, it's apparent that people want to be free to be who they naturally are. Because sooner or later, the REAL person ALWAYS inches out of the closet to introduce him/herself to the world. My mother used to always say, "What you do in the dark will come out in the light." As I've grown older, I believe there should be an addendum: "What do you do in the dark will come out in the light...especially if it feels good to you!" I'm mentioning all this because the gospel singer, TONEX, is on my mind. A while back he was outed by one of the innumerable trashy, celebrity blogs. And, at that time, he denied its claim that he is gay. Since then, he has confessed. But in his interview with gospel singer, Lexi, on The Lexi Show, he still appeared to me to dance around a couple of her questions. Oh well, all-in-all, I'm happy for him. He has lost a wife and that neck-straining habit of looking over his shoulder to see if anybody is on to him; however, he has gained the conviction to be free, free, free! Interesting thing is, he always could've been!
