What A PRECIOUS Experience!

I had been looking sooo very forward to seeing the film, PRECIOUS, directed by, Lee Daniels. Simply watching the trailers rattled my bones! Well, last Friday night, my friend, Stephen, invited me to accompany him to a screening at the Director's Guild. I was filled with a kid-like anticipation as the opening credits rolled. And then I was introduced to, Precious: a charcoal-black, morbidly obese teenaged girl whose appearance is so jolting to the senses I almost wanted to look away from the screen. You see, I've sort of seen this girl before. When I was in elementary and junior high school, there was a guy in my class who reminded me of her. Damn, I can't think of his name. He wasn't illiterate like, Precious, but he was dark and monstrously huge. Anyway, this film was so riveting to me that it highjacked my attention from beginning to end. Precious's life was so wretched that it made my current lack of professional success look like a walk in the park. Unlike my current situation, though, Precious DID turn hers around! She DID find a sense of purpose! So, she wound up better off than I am at present. The performances of Gabourey Sidibe as, Precious, and Mo'Nique as her mother, Mary Jones, are award-winning! I'll be SHOCKED if neither gets Academy Award nominations. But, alas, neither of them took on those roles for awards. I'm sure they took them on for the challenge of telling such incredible life stories. Although the film is dark in theme and in photography, it ends with BLINDING LIGHT! I left the theater that Friday night truly believing that MY life could be BETTER and BRIGHTER as long as I work toward that goal. Heck, this film moved me so much I went back to see it the next morning.  And I may even go back to see it a third!
