A Strong Friendship

I certainly hope several people I love know that despite rarely seeing them in person, nor speaking to them over the phone regularly, I still love them.

A lot.

I know that might be difficult for many to understand.

But it is what it is.

Just as I love my parents beyond description despite never seeing them in person, nor speaking to them, I feel the same devotion for several other folks.

Why don't I speak to them often? Or semi-often?

I don't really know.

Yes, I do.

I don't feel the need to.

But when I do see and/or speak to them, we pick up precisely where we left off, without skipping a beat!

That's TRUE FRIENDSHIP for ya!

Hold Your Head Up High

The words of Chinese philosopher LAO TZU move me beyond description.

I always want to pride myself on being a really tough guy. Not tough in a physical way. But more so, spiritually and character wise. Yes, I do believe I possess an inner strength that serves me well.

But I must never forget that at my core, I am soft and supple.

And I hope I always remain so!

Lao said...

“Men are born soft and supple; dead they are stiff and hard. Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry. Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken. The soft and supple will prevail."

“A great nation is like a great man: When he makes a mistake, he realizes it. Having realized it, he admits it. Having admitted it, he corrects it. He considers those who point out his faults as his most benevolent teachers. He thinks of his enemy as the shadow that he himself casts.”

I find that reading Lao's words, while listening to the song below, soothes me.

So, I think I'll keep reading and listening for a little while longer.

Back At It

I'm back out at my local park more regularly now that winter in Southern Cali has come and gone!

Vitamin D and I will get reacquainted!

While at the park, I do my requisite pull-ups, running in place, lunges, dips, jumping-jacks, etc. Working out outside is a true joy for me.

A couple of times per week, after the workouts, I stroll over to Yogurtland to get my new favorite drink: Frozen Coffee Brew. Oooooooh, weeeeeeeee! That mother tastes goooooooooood! I don't adorn the dang drink with whipped cream, nor any other toppings.

Just plain, frozen coffee.

Oooh, lawd, that thing is so delicious to me that I could drink one every day if I didn't exercise great restraint! Geez!

Well, summer of 2019, this ol' boy is ready for all the new adventures you'll bring my way!!!!!!

Get Thee Behind Me, Satan

Controlling my cholesterol has been a battle my entire adult life. The lowest it has ever been was 217 or so. The target range is below 200. It has been as high as 349 or so. This is troubling to me because my mother died with a cholesterol total ABOVE 500!!!! Yes, heart disease took her outta here!

I was first medicated with 40 mg of Lipitor. Then, that was increased to 80 mg. The thought of taking that high a dosage didn't sit well with me, so I went back to 40 mg. I have now changed meds and take Lipitor's generic version--Atorvastatin.

Yet, my cholesterol total is still not below 200. My last reading was 268!

DAMN!

What gives?????

A day or two ago, this photo popped up on my Facebook page: a flaky, fluffy biscuit, drenched in sausage gravy, accompanied by delicious-looking pieces of fried chicken.

Sinful!

But my, my, my, how I just know I would love every, single morsel! But that's the kind of food that keeps a man's cholesterol total out of whack!

DANGIT!

I love biscuits!

I love biscuits drenched in sausage gravy!

I love fried chicken (watch your mouth!!!!)!!!!! Lol!

But I love being heart healthy even more.

So...I have to maintain the strength to see food like this and leave it right where I see it.

On SOMEBODY ELSE'S plate!!!!!

DANGIT!

Rubber Band Man

If I've said it ONCE, I've said it a MILLION times!

WEAR your freakin' RETAINER after the removal of braces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My teeth were great years and years ago when my braces were first removed. I lost the retainer and never replaced it.

Thus...

I'm HERE!

Well, yesterday was the addition of rubber bands. Geez, I vaguely remember how inconvenient they were the first time around. And nothing has changed!

I'll wear these dang braces and rubber bands for as long as I have to, THEN...

When they come off...

I'm wearing a retainer ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT!

I just want my straight teeth back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What A Joke

Yes, the internet can be a cesspool of hatred and envy.

But by the same token, it can also showcase some hella funny memes!

There sure are some witty people in this world!

And I thank GOD for 'em!

Haaaaaaaaaaa!

Physically Strong, Mentally Awake And Morally Straight

Last week, I was blessed to attend the 70th Anniversary banquet of Boy Scout Troop 199. I was a member of this troop from 13-16 years old or so. I was invited to introduce the evening's keynote speaker, who just happened to be...

My younger brother------DWAYNE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote my introduction speech the night before, and set out to make it humorous, informational and complimentary. And you know what? I think I succeeded!!! I heard laughter and noticed I had indeed captured everybody's attention!

I hadn't seen my former Scoutmaster, Mr. Campbell, nor his wife, in years. But seeing them that night was as if we hadn't skipped a beat. He was running the show, per usual, and she was assisting him as she always has! Those two are most assuredly one helluva team!

Dwayne's talk had something for young people and for us not-so-young people. He spoke of Purpose and Confidence. Two attributes that are absolutely essential toward attaining and sustaining personal and professional success.

As he spoke, I thought about my relationship to all his major points. And, truth be told, I have to take responsibility for all that I've achieved, and all that I haven't. I'm tellin' you, recognizing your purpose, then fulfilling it with confidence makes you a sure winner. I sure wish I knew that in my youth. Well, I know it now, so, when you know better, you can do better!

Returning home for the Boy Scout event was also great because it allowed me to hang out with my siblings and their families. We love to eat, so we met up one morning at a terrific breakfast restaurant and had a blast!

And another of my great joys about being back home is a little placed named WHITE CASTLE! Yep, as soon as I drove away from the airport, I went straight there!!! I remember my loving friend, Shelley, once arranged for me to visit with her. Even then, I flew into Chicago, and before I arrived at her house, I made a pit stop at White Castle. A brotha simply can't seem to help himself!

I hope Scout Troop 199 goes on for years and years to come. I hold many fond memories of my days with the fellas back then. I certainly learned that my leadership abilities needed great work. And I learned that my brother possessed those abilities in spades. At 13 or 14 years old!!!!!!!! Those same abilities have served, and continue to serve him well in his illustrious career.

I'll close with the Boy Scout Oath. As a boy, I committed it to memory.

As an adult, I commit to live it day in, and day out.

"On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

And so it goes!

Friends

Chris Cleveland and Yours Truly :)

I've supported this cat in dang near every production he's been in here in Los Angeles, so, naturally, I went to Odyssey Theatre last night to see him perform in the reading of a feature film script.

The script was written by tv comedy writers. And I've gotta admit, it was pretty dang funny. I laughed at any number of scenes! The one-liners were a hoot!

Chris was the lead in the reading. And he was simply AWESOME!!!!!!

The last screening of one of his films I attended was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy down in Laguna Beach. It took us an eternity to get down there, and when we arrived, the film was already running. We walked into the theater at the tail, tail end of his scene. What the @#$!?????? After that scene concluded, his character was never seen again!

Oh, well! I was still happy he knew I was there in support!

I don't know what's next for him, but I what I know for sure is that, God willing, I'll be there to see it.

I tell ya, despite what many folks might want you to believe, in order to live a GREAT LIFE, you don't have to have tons of money.

Nor tons of degrees...

BUT...

You gotta have FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The People's Love

The recent murder of Entrepreneur/Rapper NIPSEY HUSSLE has shaken the hip hop nation.

It has definitely shaken up Los Angeles.

Luckily, a suspect has been arrested, and law enforcement seems to be deeply invested in justice.

Senseless violence is just that: senseless.

I wish people would feel better about themselves. If they did, there'd be a lot less envy in the world. When all is said and done with this case, I think we're gonna discover that the murderer was simply envious of Nipsey's success.

I hate to mention Jussie Smollett in this discussion about a real crime against humanity, but I feel strongly that his hate crime hoax was derived from his desire to be seen as a mythical martyr of sorts. I believe he longs for the kind of outpouring of love and respect Nipsey is receiving from fans. Of course, my assessment of Jussie could be wrong.

But I doubt it.

R.I.P. Mr. Hussle.

Mugshot

This golf fan has balls of steel!

Luckily for him, Tiger got a kick outta his chutzpah!!!

I tell ya, a sense of humor is EVERYTHING!
